The Protect Your Canyon campaign led by Trout Unlimited and Arizona Wildlife Federation is in full swing. We advocated to keep the current uranium mining ban in place around the Grand Canyon and Kaibab National Forest using billboards, news media advertising, sportsmen’s videos, and social media.
We are pleased to see Secretary of Interior Zinke recognize the importance of maintaining the mineral withdrawal around the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon is an irreplaceable natural and recreational treasure. Arizona residents and visitors are waking up to the serious environmental threat posed by uranium mines near the Grand Canyon. We are looking forward to a strong statement from Secretary Zinke about maintaining the mineral withdrawal to prevent mining operations from polluting the Grand Canyon landscape and the greater Colorado River. By maintaining the mineral withdrawal, we will prevent damaging outstanding wildlife habitat, and hurting local economies that depend on hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation.
